Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to six matches Friday evening at Eddie King Gym, defeating the Pioneers from Glenville State College 3-0. Charleston has only dropped one set during their consecutive match win streak, outscoring their opponents 18-1.
The University of Charleston fell to a quick deficit in the first set with three consecutive aces by Glenville before finding their grove with outside hitters. Kills by Severo, Livengood, and Larry propelled the Golden Eagles to even the score at 17 and then take a narrow lead. UC was able to close out the set 25-23 despite committing seven attack errors and hitting at a .154 percentage.
The second set began with a strong kill by Livengood but scoring would go back and forth until Brenna Barker slipped the ball to the back court to take a 7-5 lead. Key blocks by Bryant and Youlton would widen the gap for the Golden Eagles and Elle Martin used her strong serve to take the score to 13-7. A couple smart dumps by setter Melissa Reyes would again expand UC's lead to 15-9. Hitting errors by UC allowed Glenville to creep back within four points at 21-17, but Charleston would regain focus behind hard strikes by Furlong and Bryant that closed out the set for the Golden Eagles, 25-19.
Set three started with two quick points by the Golden Eagles but were quickly matched by the Pioneers before Charleston strung together the next four points to jump out to a 6-2 lead. The front court of Larry, Youlton, and Bryant made it impossible for the Glenville attackers to get anything going as they were challenged with every attack and quickly found themself down big in the third and final set. With a new front court of Livengood, Severo, and Larry, UC continued to pound away at the Pioneers expanding the lead to seven points, 22-15. Livengood's ace closed the match out five points later, giving UC a 25-17 set win and a clean sweep at 3-0.
Charleston's record goes to 17-8 overall and 8-4 in the MEC after the win. The Golden Eagles will play their last home match of the 2013 season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 as they host rival WV State at 7:00pm at the Eddie King Gym
