Falcons Keep Golden Eagles Out of MEC Volleyball Final

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. - After jumping out to a one set lead, Charleston couldn't hold back the higher-seeded Fairmont State Falcons in the Mountain East Conference semifinals Friday evening in a 3-1 loss.

UC, riding an 11-match win streak, quickly let the Falcons know that they meant business taking the first set 25-20.  With the set tied at 15-15, the Golden Eagles scored 10 of the next 15 points to take the early advantage. Charleston hit brilliantly in the first while Fairmont committed 10 attack errors.

The roles flip-flopped in set two, as the Falcons hammered away 12 kills in the set to even up the match 1-1 winning the set 25-18.  Charleston rarely had an answer for Fairmont's Bri Swann who powered down 27 kills on the evening to lead the Falcons.

Although Charleston dropped the third set 25-18, they played better and that momentum carried into the fourth set.  Down 2-1 in set scores, UC jumped out early on the Falcons 9-3 after early Fairmont miscues.  The Falcons made in-game corrections and battled back to tie the set at 18-18.  The next 10 points were played at a high level as each team refused to give an inch but ultimately the Falcons would come out on top with the set 25-21 and the match, 3-1.

The loss ended Charleston's 11-match win streak and possibly the 2013 season.  UC finished out the regular season and MEC tournament with a 22-9 overall record and 3rd place in the inaugural year of the Mountain East.

Fairmont advances to the MEC finals set to be played tomorrow most likely against host Wheeling Jesuit University.
