UC Women Can't Overcome Poor Shooting in Loss to UP-J

Box Score Charleston, WV – The University of Charleston can’t overcome their poor perimeter shooting  as they fall to the visiting Mountain Lions by 14, 83-69.

Charleston (12-9, 9-8 WVIAC) fell behind to the Mountain Cats (13-8, 11-7 WVIAC) early on as UPJ pounded the paint getting easy points while UC struggled putting the ball in the basket.  Pitt-Johnstown was able to jump out to an early 14 point lead over the Golden Eagles before Charleston’s harassing pressure forced the Mountain Lions into 15 first half turnovers getting UC back into the contest.

Charleston was able to cut the deficit down to four points after a buzzer-beating layup by Tianni Kelly (Pickerington, OH) off a feed by Jessi Cowden (Tomball, TX) with the scoreboard showing 42-38 as both teams went into the locker room.  UC was led by Keir who scored nine points and handed out three assists in the first 20 minutes of action.

Charleston was able to get within one in the first few minutes of the second half only to see UPJ push the lead back out to five 54-49 at the first media break.  At the ten minute mark of the second half Charleston again found themselves down by double-digits, trailing UPJ 66-56.

UC was able to trim the lead once again down to six points, 67-73, behind strong play from one of our departing seniors Chrissy Keir (Savreville, NJ).  Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, their poor three-point shooting for the game hurt their chances of getting any closer as the Mountain Cats closed out the game holding on to a 14-point victory, 83-69.

Charleston was led by Chrissy Keir who finished the contest with 20 points.  Pitt-Johnstown had five double-digit scorers being led by Rachel Johnson who tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Mountain Lions.

The Golden Eagles will hit the road Monday as they travel to take on the Hilltoppers of West Liberty.
