Glenville, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Golden Eagle football team suffered its second loss in as many weeks falling to Glenville State College Saturday afternoon, 34-30.
The Pioneers played a great first half as they took a seven point lead into halftime over the Golden Eagles, 17-10.
However Charleston came out in the third quarter and score 13 straight points as they took the lead 23-17 over GSC. But the Pioneers did not give in as they scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter, as Sean Steele connected with tight end Jake Harper from 36 yards out, to re-take the lead, 24-23.
The Pioneers would then add to their lead with 4:26 left to play as Tanner Wright hit a 29 yard field goal as GSC went up, 27-23.
The Golden Eagles scored on their next drive as Jermaine Kelly hit John Knox on a touchdown pass from 27 yards out as Charleston took a, 30-27 lead with only 2:07 left to play.
However the Pioneers remained cool and collected as they drove down to the Golden Eagles eight yard line. GSC found the endzone on third down as Sean Steele rolled out and hit Rahmann Lee, for an eight yard touchdown pass, as the Pioneers pulled-off the upset victory, 34-30.
Both teams had a good day rushing the ball as Charleston rushed for 163 yards on the ground while Glenville rushed for 170 yards. The Pioneers racked up 493 total of offense on 80 plays while the GSC defense allowed Charleston 344 total yards on 70 yards.
Both teams turned it over once on the day, Charleston lost a fumble while the Pioneers threw an interception.
Charleston however only had four penalties for 30 yards while the Pioneers had seven penaltites for 97 yards.
Rahmann Lee led the Pioneers rushing attack as he rushed for 129 on 32 carries and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Sean Steele went 22 for 39 for 323 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Settle's favorite target was Dante Absher as he caught nine passes for 145 yards, a career high for Absher.
For Charleston Quarterback Jordan Paul went 15 for 26 for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Wideout John Knox caught eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
The Golden Eagles return to action Thursday, October 16
th when play host to Kanawha Valley rival West Virginia State University in the inaugural Kanawha Football Classic sponsored by Frontier Communications. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
