Charleston, W.Va. - It took the Golden Eagles 85 minutes to find the back of the net Saturday afternoon at the Fields at Trace Fork as Charleston prevailed with a 1-0 win over the visiting Hilltoppers from West Liberty.
The match was played very even the entire first 45 minutes as each team created just a few chances. Charleston's best chance came in the 36th minute when
Ivey Nucilli gathered a ball in the middle of the box, turned to her right and shot just wide of the post. Only two minutes later the Hilltoppers put a scare into the Golden Eagles as Thanna Oddo took a ball just inside the 18, shot a ball past a diving
Zoe Zyta but found Zyta's best friend, the post. Charleston and West Liberty carried a 0-0 tie into half.
UC controlled possession the second half which led to seven shots but had trouble putting the ball on frame. Charleston goalkeeper Zoe Zyta came up huge late in the match, denying the Hilltoppers on four separate occasions. The Golden Eagles finally broke through in the 85th minute when a
Holly Bigg shot found woodwork but
Erica Lemmert put herself in position inside the six to put away the goal, her first as a Golden Eagle.
Lemmert's goal proved to be all Charleston needed as they held on for a 1-0 win over West Liberty. Zyta finished the match with five saves on seven Hilltopper shots.
Charleston improves to 8-5-1 overall and 7-4 in the Mountain East. UC travels to Wheeling Jesuit Tuesday to face the Cardinals at 7pm.
