#2 Men's Soccer Captures MEC Regular Season Crown

WHEELING, W.Va. - The #2 ranked University of Charleston defeated Wheeling Jesuit 4-0 on Wednesday night and clinched the 2014 Mountain East Conference regular season championship. This victory also happened to be the programs 400th win since 1967 when the program was established.

The match started by the Golden Eagles establishing possession very early and looking quite dangerous. Lewis Osborne (Wakefield, England) put UC up 1-0 in the eighth minute on a good build up play by Augusto Maciel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Leighton Richards (Glen Allen, VA). Charleston looked to find the second goal but a few saves from Wheeling's goalkeeper, Cody Thompson kept the match at 1-0.

The second half started by Wheeling Jesuit creating a chance on goal forcing a diving tip over the bar from UC goalkeeper Fabian Veit (Dielheim, Germany). It wouldn't be until the 72nd minute that UC found their second goal as leading goal scorer, Maciel, found the back of the net after a good pass by Andrew Harrison (Washington, England). Just eight minutes later Captain Conor Branson (Pontefract, England) laced the back of the net and relieved a bit of pressure for the Golden Eagles. Just to add a bit of insurance Branson added his second goal of the night from a pass by Jules Gabbiadini (York, England). Charleston finished match at 4-0 over Wheeling, clinching the MEC regular season championship. Veit earned his fourth shutout in goal with 4 saves on the night.

The Golden Eagles are back in action for their last home game Saturday night at 7pm against West Virginia Wesleyan.
