CHARLESTON, W.Va. - (By Terry Fletcher) Even amid near-freezing temperatures, the top-seeded University of Charleston's men's soccer team remained hot, torching No. 4 Bloomsburg 5-0 Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament at Schoenbaum Soccer Stadium in Charleston.
The Golden Eagles (19-0-1, 11-0-1 Mountain East Conference) earned their 10th straight victory and advance to play the winner of No. 2 Mercyhurst/No. 3 Notre Dame College in the third round either Friday or Saturday.
Charleston didn't waste any time, netting its first goal just four minutes into the match when freshman forward
Will Roberts (Denbigh, Wales) found junior
Augusto Maciel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) for his 16th score of the season.
The Huskies were whistled for a handball 14 minutes later, setting up a penalty kick for Charleston. Roberts beat Bloomsburg keeper Jared Ott to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
"I think it was just sticking to the philosophy that we've had all season," said UC coach Chris Grassie of his team's ability to create scoring chances. "We've tried to move the ball quickly and we like the guys who have creative skills to express themselves."
That creativity was on full display in the second half.
Renan Ramos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) scored off an assist from
Leighton Richards (Glen Allen, VA) just seven minutes into the half and Maciel found
Felipe Rafael Antonio (Sao Paulo, Brazil) four minutes later for another score to put UC up 4-0.
Maciel scored his second goal of the night off a deflected shot with 23 minutes remaining to cap the scoring.
"We encourage that attack and play but it starts in the back," said Grassie. "We move the ball quickly and get it up front. We've got really skillful, experienced, quick, strong guys up front and they take care of business."
The UC defense was superb, allowing just 10 shots, five on goal. The Golden Eagles have only allowed nine goals all season and haven't given up a first-half score in any of their 20 games.
"Obviously, when you don't concede a goal, you're a good defense," said Bloomsburg coach Paul Payne. "They're a good overall team that punished us for our mistakes, and we knew that coming in. You throw a clean sheet up, you're a good defensive team."
UC finished the year ranked No. 1 in the nation, a huge turnaround from last year's 12-5 team.
"Last year we weren't as bad as our record showed, we just didn't gel," said Grassie. "We had a lot of new players thrown together, it was a new bunch. I think they've really gotten to know each other and that's all part of being a team."
