Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#1 Charleston Wins MEC Tournament Title With 1-0 Victory

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Jake Young (Cambridge, England) connected with header off a corner kick sent in by Will Roberts (Denbigh, Wales) in the 69th minute and gave the University of Charleston a 1-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the Mountain East Conference Tournament final at Schoenbaum Field.

Wheeling controlled possession early, but could not manage quality scoring opportunities. Meanwhile UC has several dangerous moments including a shot cleared off the line by a Cardinals defender.

UC found its rhythin in the second half and controlled more of the action, and finally broke through on one of its six corner kicks in the second half as Roberts found Young making a run to the far post for the clean header. The Golden Eagles only allowed one WJU shot in the final 45 minutes to secure the victory.

Roberts, Young, Conor Branson (Pontefract, England)and Augusto Maciel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each earned spots on the MEC All-Tournament team.

The win secured both the MEC regular season and tournament championships for the Golden Eagles who finished the season (18-0-1). The top-ranked Golden Eagles will learn of their NCAA Tournament bracket on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
