Charleston Bench Leads Golden Eagles to Win Over Bluefield

CHARLESTON - The University of Charleston used 35 points from their bench Wednesday evening to defeat the visiting Bluefield College Rams 58-41 at the Eddie King Gymnasium.

Charleston got a slow start from their starting five and Coach Adam Collins didn't waste any time going to his bench, subbing all five just three and a half minutes into the game.  The Golden Eagle bench immediately made an impact cutting an early deficit of five points to just one point, 13-14, eight minutes into the contest.

UC finally got on track to outscore the Rams 20 to five over the final 12 minutes to carry the Golden Eagles into half leading by 13 points, 32-19.  Marissa Koob proved to be the spark off the bench for Charleston, scoring eight points and going two-for-two from deep.  The Charleston bench outscored the Ram bench 19-0 over the first 20 minutes.

Although the Golden Eagles didn't play flawless basketball over the final 20 minutes, Bluefield never threatened the Charleston lead only getting as close as nine points down the stretch.  UC built its biggest lead of 22 points on a bucket by Monet Saunders with only 3:25 remaining as Charleston closed out the 17-point win over the visiting Rams, 58-41.

The Golden Eagles had 13 players in the scorebooks, led by Monet Saunders 10 points and seven rebounds.  Destiny Tolliver provided a solid stat line for Bluefield, scoring 10 points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking six shots.

UC goes to 6-2 overall and hosts Ohio Valley Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
