GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Second-seeded Edinboro held off Charleston, 64-62, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium on the campus of Glenville State.
Nichole Perry's jumper in the lane to tie the game as time wound down would not fall as the Fighting Scots (25-5) advanced to take on cross-town rival Gannon in the second round.
Charleston (21-9) was paced by 20 points, five rebounds and five assists from Chyress Lockhart. Perry drilled five three-pointers in the game to help pace the Golden Eagles.Â
Valerie Majewski led the Fighting Scots with 18 points. Aingee Freeland had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Darche' Jackson had 13 points and five boards.
UC held a significant edge on the glass in the first half pulling down 15 offensive rebounds. Edinboro made the adjustment at the half and held Charleston to just four in the second half and gathered 10 of its own. The final rebounding margin was just 37-35 for UC in the game.
After struggling from close range from the floor in the first half, UC shot 56 percent in the final 20 minutes of action and finished shooting 41 percent for the game. Edinboro hit 46 percent of its shots from the field.Â
Lockhart's running jumper as time expired tied the game at 27-27 at halftime. UC built on that momentum and led by as many as eight points early in the second half before Edinboro fought back into the game and tied the game at 43-43 with still 13:28 to go.Â
Freeland's layup with 1:00 left gave the Fighting Scots a four-point lead, 64-60. Lockhart was able to knock down free throws at the other end to make it 64-62. The Golden Eagles got the defensive stand it needed and forced a miss, but Majewski was able to corral her own rebound and force UC to foul. Lauren Hippo went to the line but missed her first attempt on a one-and-one, and Perry got the rebound with still :19 seconds left. After a scramble at the top of the key, Perry shook free on the right side and drove down the lane where her attempt would not fall and Edinboro held on for the win.
