CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Men's Basketball team opened the New Year with a 60-52, victory over Mountain East Conference opponent West Virginia Wesleyan. With the victory Charleston runs their winning streak to four games.
Chris Evans (Stamford, CT) and
Jevonte Hughes (Kalamazoo, MI) led the way for UC each tallying double-digit scoring performances. For UC, defense was key yet again as they held Wesleyan to just 39-percent (19-48) from the field and a staggering 1-11 from behind the arch.
WVWC wouldn't go away quietly dwindling a 15-point lead created by the Golden Eagles to just five when Chris Dewberry lay-up fell in with a 1:46 left in the game. However, Charleston connected on 6-of-9 free throws down the stretch to hold on to the eight point victory.
Tanner McGrew led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Bobcats. Dewberry chipped in 13 points and Taylor Price added eight on the night for Wesleyan.
UC moves to 8-3 on the season and 3-2 in MEC play. Charleston is back in action Monday when they travel to Glenville, W.Va. with tip off slated for 7:30pm.
