CHARLESTON, W.Va. - University of Charleston senior guard
Nichole Perry scored her 1,000th point in the Golden Eagles 61-46 over the visiting Concord University Mountain Lions Thursday evening at Eddie King Gymnasium, their third consecutive win over Mountain East Conference opponents in the new year.
Perry finished the contest 10 points and was helped in the scoring column by game-high scorer
Monet Saunders' 14 points and eight rebounds.
Marissa Koob rounded out the double figure scorers for UC to come off the bench with 11 points.
Kiara Johnson was a monster on the glass for the Golden Eagles, pulling down 15 rebounds and was the key contributor to UC's 48 to 28 domination on the glass against the Mountain Lions.
Concord (3-8, 3-4 MEC) got double digit scoring from Rachel Atrip and Jacqueline Kestner who finished with 13 and 10 points respectively. The Golden Eagle defense stymied the Mountain Lion offense, limiting Concord to just 29% shooting from the floor and 13% from behind the arc.
Although Charleston (10-3, 5-2) came away with the 15-point victory, the first 11 minutes of the contest was a struggle for UC and found themselves on the short end of a 6-12 ballgame before Coach Adam Collins subbed out his starters for a new five. That was the spark the Golden Eagles needed with the bench going on 15-0 run, led by Koob knocking down three 3-pointers during that stretch. Charleston carried a 24-19 lead into the break after trailing early.
Coming out of halftime Perry was still looking for her 1,000th point after going scoreless the first 20 minutes. She didn't waste much time reaching that milestone when Saunders drove to the paint then found Perry at the top of the key for a straight away three that she knocked down hundreds of times before. The game was paused for a brief moment to recognize Perry's 1,000 point milestone. Charleston continued their strong start to the half, scoring 12 unanswered points to stretch its lead to 17, 36-19, three minutes into the half. UC built its lead out to 21 points before settling for the 15-point victory over the visiting Mountain Lions.
The Golden Eagles return to Eddie King Gym this Saturday, January 10th to host Urbana with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.Â
