Wheeling, W.Va.- #1 Charleston falls on the road at the hands of Wheeling Jesuit.
Â
UC started the game in regular fashion on the front foot, with Jake Young, Jordan Lavender, Lewis Osborne and Conor Branson all going close.
Â
After 32 minutes, Wheeling Jesuit found themselves taking a surprise 1-0 lead against the run of play, when Aitor De Heredia struck the ball from the edge of the 18 yard box, which took a deflection taking the ball past the hands of Veit.
Â
Â
After 55 minutes, UC produced their best chance of the game that saw Osborne with a good opportunity from 18 yards out, only for the Jesuit keeper to produce a remarkable save low down to his right. Maciel followed up with the rebound hitting the crossbar from 4 yards out on a tight angle. The ball then bounced down off the crossbar onto the line, before being cleared by scrambling Jesuit defenders. A sign that it wasn't going to be UC's night.
Â
In the 61
st minute Wheeling earned a corner kick, the ball was headed back across goal by De Heredia, leaving Vincent Faraji with a simple header from close range.
Â
UC continued to fight, but Jesuit keeper Mathew McCormick was in inspired form making several first class saves. It was to be McCormick's and Wheeling Jesuit's night, defeating the number one team in the nation. The rowdy crowd flooded the pitch after the final whistle, rushing over to the Jesuit goalkeeper, who was the hero of the night. It was the first time UC have lost a regular season match in 26 games, an unbeaten streak stretching back from October 2013. That was also the last time they didn't score in a match.
Â
UC Head Coach Chris Grassie was quick to play down the defeat, stating, "This has to be a learning moment for us. We will learn a lot about ourselves now, and how we respond to this setback. Credit has to go to the Wheeling players and coaching staff for a fantastic effort and excellent tactical game-plan. I'm confident that we will be better in the long run from this defeat, as long as we stick together and trust in each other, this can only make us stronger."
Â
UC are back in home action on Saturday against Shepherd, 4pm KO.
