Charleston, WV – The Eagles were golden as they tore apart the Chowan Hawks, winning the match up 7-1.
Â
Charleston, who are normally great starters to games this season, found themselves trailing after sixteen minutes. Chowan's All-American forward Terrell Williamson scored his 11
th of this season's campaign, when he beat UC's backline. Williamson beat goalkeeper
Fabian Veit, despite both Viet's and
Jake Young's best efforts to clear before it bounced awkwardly over the line. For the first time in 7 games this season, UC had conceded a goal at home. It was also only the second time they had been trailing in a game all season. The reaction was almost instantaneous, as less than a minute later UC were level thanks to an outrageous volley from
Felipe Antonio.
Augusto Maciel played the ball in the air into Antonio's path just outside the 18-yard box, and he struck the ball on the volley firing into the top corner, leaving the Hawk's goalkeeper with no chance.
Â
Less than 5 minutes later, UC were in the lead thanks to the vision and ability of
Michael Hagarty to clip the 25-yard pass into
Will Roberts expertly timed run. Roberts lobbed the on rushing goalkeeper with ease, putting UC into a 2-1 lead, 6 minutes after they were trailing.
Â
Eleven minutes later, UC extended their lead. Â This time it was
Conor Branson on the score sheet following some clever combination play around the box. Branson played the ball into
Renan Ramos and continued his run; Ramos delightfully scooped the ball over the Chowan backline leaving Branson with only the goalkeeper to beat. He did so convincingly, rounding the Chowan goalkeeper and slotting the ball home.
Â
On the stroke of half time UC added their fourth and Roberts added his second of the game. Excellent play from
Lewis Osborne on the left hand side, created a crossing opportunity which Osborne fired across the box, leaving Roberts with a simple tap in.
Â
It was again Osborne creating the chance for Roberts for UC's 5
th, as he drove from the halfway line beating several Chowan defenders before he was brought down in the area by a Chowan defender. Roberts stepped up to slot the ball home from 12 yards, and the infamous bird celebration epically followed for the third time of the afternoon.
Â
Roberts was really in the mood for flapping his wings, and after 64 minutes he added his 4
th goal of the game. It was again excellent play by Osborne on the left beating Chowan defenders, which gave space to Ramos who he pick out in the area, Ramos selflessly squared to Roberts who converted the chance. That was UC's All-American strikers 11
th goal of the season, in 12 games. Roberts was brought off after scoring his 4
th goal, a sight which must have made the tortured Chowan defenders pleased.
Â
After 75 minutes, Augusto Maciel was brought down in the area for UC's second penalty kick of the afternoon. With Roberts off the pitch, Maciel dusted himself off and slotted the ball home for his 5
th goal in as many games.
Â
It was certainly Will Roberts' afternoon, scoring 4 of UC 7 goals, with many thanks being awarded to Osborne, who had a hand in three of his four goals (as well as Hagarty and Ramos). It was a fantastic team performance that saw UC progress to 12-1-0 for the season. They are back in MEC action on Thursday, against the Notre Dame Falcons.
