SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - #5 Charleston rally to win over conference rivals Notre Dame.
Â
After early exchanges the Golden Eagles started to dominate the game and got their reward after 25 minutes. Will Robert's solo effort cutting into from the right hand side, saw his first shot saved but he slotted the rebound into the top right corner.
Â
With 25 seconds left in the first half the Eagles doubled their lead, from a counter attack that saw Leighton Richards break away and sliding the ball perfectly in Jermaine Windster's path. Windster slotted the ball home past the onrushing goalkeeper with ease, to open his account for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Notre Dame continued to fight, and made the game scrappy in the second half, playing very direct and pumping every set piece into the box. They did manage to make a game of things, when Renan Troccoli poked the ball past Fabian Veit, after a long throw-in was only half cleared. 13 minutes later on the 73rd minute mark, the game was back level, when Leonardo Paiva latched onto a flicked header and neatly volleyed the ball past Veit.
Â
UC soaked up the Notre Dame pressure and regained the lead after 83 minutes, when Will Roberts' shot was deflected past the Falcons goalkeeper. Charleston showed great fight and desire to get back into the game and deal with the aerial onslaught from the Falcons.
Â
"That was a very difficult match. Notre Dame had the game plan of slowing the match down and making everything a fight. Although we definitely weren't at our best today, as far as playing flowing soccer goes, I was very pleased with our resiliency and fight. We showed that we were able to win an ugly match, which will be valuable as we get into the post season." said head coach, Chris Grassie.
Â
The victory saw UC move to 13-1-0 for the season, whilst the Falcons dropped to 10-5-0.
