Records Fall in 52-Point Thrashing of Cavaliers

WISE, Va. – The Golden Eagle defense forced a single game record eight Cavalier turnovers in a 59-7 thrashing of University of Virginia College at Wise at Carl Smith Stadium to close out the 2015 regular season.

Charleston improves to 10-1 on the year and ties the school record for wins in a single season.  The Cavaliers close out the season with just one win, going 1-10.

Many Golden Eagle Football records fell in the season finale, highlighted by the eight forced turnovers, six of which came by way of interception, also a program single game record.  Zaire Lewis had one of those picks, making it his fifth of the season which ties the single season mark.  James King recovered his third fumble of the season, tying him with the previous mark for recovered fumbles.

On the offensive side, Jeremy Johnson now owns the single season passing yards record with 1,898 yards and counting after throwing for 218 yards against the Cavs.  His favorite target this season has been Joey Augustin, who already holds the single season and career TD receptions records, and will now own the single season receiving yards record after hauling in three receptions for 102 yards, giving him 849 total yards for 2015.

Charleston rattled off 52 straight points before the Cavaliers scored on a defensive touchdown after a Golden Eagle fumble.  UC had six rushing touchdowns, three coming from Jermaine Kelly on runs of six, eight, and 25 yards.  Johnson connected with D'Andre Brooks for the only TD toss of the night.  The Golden Eagles again got a score from their defense, a 34-yard interception return by Johnathan Pruden early in the second quarter.

Malcolm Cater filled the stat sheet for the Golden Eagle defense, totaling 10 tackles, a sack, and an interception which he returned for 73 yards out of the Charleston end zone.  Converted quarterback/wide receiver, John Knox had two picks from his safety position to go along with three tackles and three pass break-ups.

The win likely guarantees Charleston not only its first NCAA Playoff berth but also means the Golden Eagles will probably be hosting a first round game, which is tentatively set for Saturday, November 21 at 12 p.m.  More information will become available following the NCAA Division II Selection Show that is scheduled to air this Sunday, November 15th at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
