CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston's first trip into the NCAA postseason didn't go as planned as they suffered their first home loss of the season, 47-21, to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the NCAA DII Football First Round at University of Charleston Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Four second half turnovers and a blocked punt doomed the Golden Eagles as the mistakes allowed the Crimson Hawks to rattle off 34 consecutive points after Charleston had a 21-13 lead midway through the third quarter. IUP was able to turn three of the UC errors and the blocked into 28 points as the Crimson Hawks advance to the second round to face number one seeded Shepherd University next Saturday in Shepherdstown.
It still was a historic season for the Golden Eagles as many individual records were broken, made their first NCAA postseason since reestablishing the program in 2003, and the 10 wins ties the record for most wins in a season by a Golden Eagle football team.
UC's Marvin Elam finished the game with 160 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown to lead the ground attack. Jeremy Johnson completed half of his 22 pass attempts for 172 yards and a TD to complete his senior season and final year eligibility. Rashawn Dickerson was Johnson's favorite target on the afternoon, hauling in six catches for 111 yards and a video game like 51 yard screen pass that he took to the end zone after weaving through most of the Crimson Hawk defenders.
Charleston's Jalen Nelson totaled 10 tackles, three and half coming for loss to anchor the Golden Eagle defense. Zaire Lewis picked off his sixth pass in Saturday's first half to set the single-season mark.
