CHARLESTON, W.VA. – The Golden Eagles got all they wanted from Notre Dame College at Schoenbaum Stadium on Saturday night but late goals from
Will Roberts and
Felipe Antonio secured a 4-2 win in the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Second Round.
Â
Charleston came out of the gate strong scoring two goals in the first 25 minutes and looked well on their way to an easy victory over the visiting Falcons.Â
Jake Young's header from a
Bruno Oliveira corner in the 20
th minute gave UC a one goal advantage, followed by a
Lewis Osborne tap in from a few yards out after Roberts drove a low ball across the box past the reaching Notre Dame keeper in the 25
th minute that gave UC a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Â
Notre Dame hadn't come this far to give up and cut the lead in half in the 40
th minute when Julian Castro's shot glanced off a UC defender past Golden Eagle keeper
Fabian Veit. The score stood at 2-1 going into halftime with Charleston on top.
Â
The Falcons evened that match at 2-2 just 11 minutes into the second half when Declan McGivern flicked a ball over the outstretched Veit and had taken full control of momentum. The Golden Eagles were not going to be denied advancing into the NCAA Third Round, and in the 75
th minute a long ball played by Osborne found Roberts who calmly collected the pass and expertly beat an onrushing Daniel Nagy with a chip to the far post for the game winner.
Â
Just for insurance, Antonio scored moments later on a powerful header from Osborne's cross after beating his defender to the end line and sending the ball onto Antonio's path. The match stood 4-2 with just under 14 minutes to play and remain unchanged as the Golden Eagle faithful celebrated as the clock hit all zeros.
Â
