UC Women Cruise Past Clarion

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -  The University of Charleston women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Clarion University 78-65 at the Walker Convocation Center as part of the PSAC-MEC Challenge.

UC was again led by senior Chyress Lockhart, who poured in 20 points and dished out eight assists.  Mya Walker chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds in just her second game as a Golden Eagle, while Monet Saunders scored 15 and pulled down nine boards.

After a close first quarter, the Golden Eagles outscored Clarion by 10 in the second frame to carry a 38-27 lead into the locker room at half.  UC built onto that lead in the third quarter to extend their cushion to 19 points, 61-42.  Charleston saw their lead swell to 23 points early in the fourth quarter only to struggle closing out the game as Clarion closed with nine, 71-62, with 1:30 left to play.

UC still cruised to the 13 point win in the end, 78-65, to grab their first win of the 2015-16 campaign.

Charleston makes their home debut Tuesday evening at the Charleston Civic Center against Malone University.  The Pioneers are coached by Adam Collins' former assistant, Ryan Bailey.  Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
