Wheeling, W.Va.—As the 2015 Mountain East Conference regular season came to a close on Saturday night, the University of Charleston Women's Volleyball team earned a No. 3 seed for this week's MEC Volleyball Tournament. In the first round quarterfinals on Thursday, November 19
th, the Golden Eagles (19-10, 13-3) will take on No. 6 seed West Liberty University (15-17, 8-8) at noon in Wheeling, West Virginia at the McDonough Center.
The eight-team tournament bracket was released by the conference office with the sixth-ranked Lady Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit University (30-4, 16-0) earning the top seed and the right to host the tournament. Fairmont State (23-7, 14-2), was named the second seed. UVa-Wise (15-16, 10-6) was named the fourth seed as Shepherd University (15-16, 9-7) was named the fifth seed. Urbana University (13-16, 7-9) earned the seventh seed and West Virginia Wesleyan (12-18, 6-10) received the eighth seed for the final spot in the tournament.
Tournament play begins Thursday with a first-round matchup between your third-seeded Golden Eagles and the sixth-seeded Hilltoppers followed by No. 2 Fairmont State versus No. 7 Urbana at 2:30 p.m. On the top half of the bracket the UVa-Wise Cavs will face the Rams at 5 p.m. before the top-seeded Lady Cardinals take on the eighth-seeded Lady Bobcats in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
UC's Golden Eagles will look to defeat the West Liberty Hilltoppers in the first round quarterfinals. UC beat West Liberty this past Friday on the road in 3 sets, (25-19, 25-21, 25-17). Should UC defeat West Liberty, the Golden Eagles will then matchup against the winner of No. 2 Fairmont State University and No. 7 Urbana University. If Fairmont wins, the Golden Eagles will look to avenge their regular season loss to Fairmont in which UC took Fairmont to four very close sets, losing (22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25). UC defeated Urbana in regular season in 3 sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-27).
The MEC tournament will be played inside the McDonough Center on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit. Free online streaming of all matches will be available via Wheeling Jesuit's CardinalCast, along with live stats. Links for the live streaming and live stats will become available later this week.
