Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Third Times a Charm for #6 Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit's luck ran out last night as they fell 6-0 to the rampant Golden Eagles.

Charleston was certainly fired up after they dropped to number #6 in the national poll, their lowest rank on the season. The fall was due to the two defeats on their 15-2-0 record, both coming at the hands of Jesuit. Wheeling's luck from Saturdays overtime victory had certainly ran out last night as UC breezed to a 6-0.

Wheeling set up in their usual defensive way looking to contain the Eagles and absorb pressure. It was successful for 29 minutes, but UC constant pressure forced an own goal from Jesuit. Great play from Lewis Osborne down the left had side saw him put the ball through the defenders legs, then fire a ball across the 6 yard box. In a desperate attempt to clear, J.J. Hawkshaw put the ball into the back of his own net.

The scored remain 1-0 at halftime, but 40 seconds after the break UC doubled their lead. Another good run by Osborne this time led to him slipping a perfectly waited through ball to Augusto Maciel, whose excellent first touch saw him easily finish past the Cardinals goalkeeper.

The third goal was to be admired by UC. The ball was won in midfield and played out to Will Roberts, who drove inside, passing the ball into Felipe Antonio. Antonio laid the ball back to Maciel, who slipped the ball through to Roberts with one touch.  Roberts, who had continued his third man run, fished to the Cardinal's goalkeeper's lower right side. That was Roberts' 18th goal of the season, already matching last season's tally.

UC's fourth goal of the evening came after a combination of passes, the ball reached Michael Hagarty who played a neat one-two around the corner to Antonio. Hagarty struck the returned pass first time from 20 yards out into the bottom right hand corner. Hagarty brilliantly claimed his second goal of the season.

The fifth goal of the evening came after 79 minutes, when brilliant play from Dion Stergiotis saw him cross the ball for Maciel to score his second goal of the evening.

The scoring wasn't done there, on the 88th minute Maciel scored his third of the evening pouncing on a parry, from a Stergiotis shot. Maciel finished the chance lifting the ball over the dejected Cardinals keeper, completing his hat trick.

UC outshot their opponents 23-4, denying them a single shot on target.

After the victory Coach Grassie said, "That was more like it!"

The victory puts Charleston in the Mountain East Conference Final this Sunday at Coonskin Park. Kick off is set for 1pm.
