CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston men's soccer team won their seventh consecutive conference tournament title Sunday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium, defeating Notre Dame College 2-0 on a gorgeous November day to defend the Mountain East Conference crown.
Charleston won the last four tournament titles in the now defunct WVIAC and have now won the first three tournament championships in the MEC. It marked the third time UC had defeated the Falcons this season, improving their record to 17-2 before heading to next week's national tournament. The selection show for the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament is Monday evening at 6:00 p.m.
Will Roberts got Charleston on the board in the 71st minute after converting his fifth PK in as many tries.Â
Jermaine Windster was taken down just inside the Falcon penalty area and the referee wasted no time pointing to the spot for Roberts to stick in his 19th goal of the year.Â
Clinging to the 1-0 lead, Charleston was looking for the final nail in the coffin and once again it was Windster involved in providing that game clinching goal.Â
Leighton Richards latched onto a Windster pass inside the center of the penalty area and cleverly converted to give UC the 2-0 lead with only three minutes to play. The Golden Eagles chewed up the clock with their usual possession and watched the scoreboard hit double zeros as they celebrated another conference tournament title.
Charleston's
Augusto Maciel, Will Roberts, and
Jake Young were named to the MEC All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play over the semifinals and finals.Â
