SOUTH EUCLID, W.Va. - An
Isabella Jaffin goal in the 53rd minute of the Mountain East women's soccer semifinal was enough to get Charleston into its first MEC final since joining the conference two seasons ago.
Outshot 16-4, UC's
Zoe Zyta came through with nine saves for her ninth shutout of the 2015 season in preserving the 1-0 semifinal win over Notre Dame. Charleston and the Falcons had split the season series but Notre Dame had the higher seed in today's match which allowed them to host the Golden Eagles.Â
Hannah Myers beat the Falcon defender on the left sideline and placed a perfectly weighted pass through the Notre Dame defense that found Jaffin in stride who neatly took a touch and buried a shot inside the right post that gave Charleston the 1-0 victory.
The win sets up a Sunday final with West Virginia Wesleyan College who narrowly escaped Shepherd, winning on PK's in Thursday's other semifinal. The Bobcats come into the match unbeaten, 17-0-3, and twice defeated the Golden Eagles this season with a 1-0 score line. UC will have its hands full with the Wesleyan defense as they have allowed just two goals on the season.
Sunday's match will be in Buckhannon with 1:00 p.m. slated for kickoff.Â
