FRANKFORT, Ky. - The University of Charleston traveled out of conference Monday evening to play the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University and returned to UC with a 17-point loss, 62-45.
Charleston jumped out to an early 10-2 lead as they looked for their second straight win, but things didn't go right for the Golden Eagles the rest of the way despite holding a narrow 14-12 lead at the end of quarter number one. The Thorobreds jumped all over UC in the second quarter, outscoring Charleston 25-11 and closed out the quarter on a 11-0 run to take a 37-25 lead to halftime.Â
The Golden Eagles never got the deficit under single digits in the second half and trailed by as many as 18 late in the game as Kentucky State cruised to the win. Charleston struggled from the field as they just connected on 18 of their 62 attempts to shoot 29 percent for the contest. The Thorobred bench was big in the victory, outscoring the UC bench 36-7 over the the 40 minutes of play, getting 22 points Jamesha Mosley.
Chyress Lockhart paced UC with 20 points on 50 percent shooting (7-14) while Mya Walker chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.Â
Kentucky State improves to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Charleston falls even at 3-3 with the loss. The Golden Eagles return to action Thursday on the road at Urbana University with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
