27 Turnovers Plague Golden Eagles in Loss

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Chowan University forced 27 Golden Eagle turnovers as Charleston fell at home to the visiting Hawks, 75-59, Tuesday evening at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex.

UC, losers of four straight, runs their overall record to 3-6 and remains 1-3 in Mountain East Conference play after Tuesday night's loss.  Chowan goes a game over .500, improving their record to 5-4 on the 2015-16 season.

Chyress Lockhart led Charleston with 15 points, 13 coming in the first half after only playing six minutes in the second half.  Kiara Johnson followed with 14 points in 21 minutes and Taylor Smith came off the Golden Eagle bench to score eight points on 3-of-3 shooting.

Chowan's Courtni Williams led all scorers with 19 points followed closely by Dhyamond Crenshaw's 17 points and six rebounds.  The Hawks scored 26 points on Charleston's 27 turnovers which proved to be the difference in Tuesday night's game.

UC led early, 12-6, but Chowan scored 16 straight points to grab possession of the game.   The Golden Eagles closed within four, 28-24, late in the second quarter but the Hawks again responded with an 8-0 run and took a 36-28 lead into the break despite a Lockhart runner off the glass that beat the horn and pull Charleston within single digits.

Chowan was never threatened by the UC comeback attempts, increasing their lead to as many as 19 early in the fourth quarter before cruising to the 16-point road win.

Charleston gets seven days of rest before playing the University of Pitt Johnstown on the road next Tuesday looking to get a win.
