CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Golden Eagle freshman Steven Davis capped off a seven-run ninth inning with a walk-off three-run home run to give the University of Charleston a 12-11 win in the doubleheader split with #25 ranked Ashland University at Triana Field Wednesday evening.
Trailing 11-5 heading into bottom of the ninth inning, UC was down to its last out of the game and facing a doubleheader sweep by Ashland. Â Charleston responded with one of the most dramatic comebacks in Golden Eagle baseball history, scoring seven runs to complete the comeback. Â Mike Hoeft started the scoring after reaching on an error then eventually made his way home on a Ashland pass ball. Â Josh Easterling followed a Zach Gunter walk with a RBI single to right driving in Robbie Collin. Â
Still two outs, UC freshman Matthew Houser smashed a shot over the Ashland center fielder driving in two Golden Eagles to cut the deficit to 11-9. Â Tyler Ocker laced a single to right moving Houser to third and gave Charleston runners on the corners with Davis coming to the plate representing the winning run. Â The freshman was looking for his first hit of his UC career and came through in a big way belting a towering homerun to right field that gave Charleston the 12-11 win over the nationally ranked Eagles from Ashalnd. Â
Anthony Brunetti (1-0) earned the win for Charleston after working the ninth inning in relief of UC starter Jordan Banks who went five plus innings, allowing seven runs in his season debut on the mound.
Charleston fell in game one to Ashland 9-2. Â UC freshman Kaleb Kinder made his first career start going four and a third innings in the loss. Â Senior center fielder Robbie Collin went three-for-four from the plate for the Golden Eagles who only had seven total hits.
UC (4-6, 3-5 MEC) returns to action this weekend as they travel to Shepherd University for a four-game series with the Rams.Â
