Charleston Wins Sixth Straight

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -  Jenna Evans and Katelyn Hamilton provided a one-two punch at the plate today combining to go 8-for-10 with five runs scored and 10 runs batted in as the University of Charleston defeated Wheeling Jesuit by the scores of 5-3 and 10-1 in a Sunday MEC double-header.

Game one saw UC senior Courtney Fain pitch seven strong innings, striking out 14 WJU batters while only surrendering three hits and three runs in the 5-3 victory.  Fain picked up her MEC leading 10th victory of the season and leads all pitchers with 101 strikeouts.  At the plate, UC pushed across five runs the first two coming in the second inning when Evans singled home Cortney Norris who drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bethany Williams.  Hamilton followed with an RBI single herself scoring Evans from second who advanced to second on the throw.  Hamilton and Evans each scored again in the fifth which proved to be enough offense for Charleston.

In game two of the double-header the offense exploded for four runs in the first and five runs in the second and a 9-1 lead that gave freshman Jessie Rowe some breathing room.  Rowe picked up her fourth victory of the season in five innings of work, striking out six, while only allowing one unearned run.  Williams, Evans, Norris, and Hamilton each had multiple hits in the game combining for seven runs batted in and six of the 10 runs scored.

On the day Evans finished 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored, two doubles, and six runs batted in.  Hamilton follwed right behind her with four hits in six at bats while driving in four on the day.

Charleston with the two victories moves to 21-4 on the season 8-2 in MEC play. UC is scheduled to host Kentucky Christian in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday March 31st.
