CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Golden Eagles picked up two wins in the four-game weekend series against the visiting Falcons from Notre Dame College at Triana Field this past Saturday and Sunday.
UC began the series with a 7-5 win over Notre Dame after scoring six runs in the fifth inning to give Golden Eagle pitcher
Tyler Shreve all of the run support he needed. Trailing 2-1 heading into the fifth, Charleston sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame resulting in the big inning. Notre Dame would threaten in the top half of the seventh but Shreve wasn't to be denied the win, closing out the Falcons with a 7-5 victory.
Josh Easterling went 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring two runs and driving in one to lead the Charleston offense.Â
Benji Adkins had a solid performance as well at the DH position, driving in two runs on his two hits. Shreve worked all seven innings for the complete game win, giving up five runs on seven hits while stirking out three Falcon batters.
Game two saw the Golden Eagles overpowered by Falcon pitcher Josh Armbruster who pitched all seven innings of the 6-0 shutout of Charleston. Armbruster carried a no-hitter into the the seventh inning before
Zach Gunter played spoiler, singling down the left field line for UC's only hit in the game.
The opening game Sunday afternoon saw a pitcher's duel between Charleston starter
Patrick Chiaramonte and the Falcons' Zach Gresch. Notre Dame struck first scoring runs in the third and fourth innings to carry a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Charleston responded in the fourth with clutch two-out hitting led by a
Anthony Brunetti single, followed by a Gunter double that scored Brunetti from first. Easterling singled to center that scored Gunter from second, then was driven in by a deep shot over the center fielder's head by
Matthew Houser to give Charleston a 3-2 lead.
Notre Dame had a good chance to score in the sixth but Brunetti backed up a diving effort from
Robert Collin and fired a strike to the plate to nail Falcon runner TJ Lett to preserve the 3-2 lead for Charleston. Again the Falcons had a runner in scoring position in the seventh with one out but Chiaramonte got the final two Falcons to fly out to left to hang on for the 3-2 Golden Eagle win.
Chiaramonte worked the complete game win for Charleston, giving up two runs on six Falcon hits while striking out six Notre Dame batters.
Charleston ran into a buzzsaw in game four of the series, taking a 12-1 loss. Notre Dame started the scoring, plating three off of Golden Eagle starter
Dylan Saunders. UC got within two after a Gunter homerun to left field that cut the deficit to 3-1. Notre Dame got a bit of fortune in the fifth inning when a sure double play ball hit the umpire and put runners on first and second with nobody out. The Falcons went on to score six runs in the frame to take a commanding 9-1 lead before eventually leaving Charleston with a 12-1 win and a split with the Golden Eagles.
UC (7-13, 6-12 MEC) hits the road for the next nine games, first traveling to Concord this Saturday to take on the Mountain Lions in a four-game weekend series.
