CHARLESTON, W.Va. – It wasn't the University of Charleston's night as they fell to the Glenville State College Pioneers, 62-73, in the Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinals Friday evening at the Charleston Civic Center.
Â
UC was led by Golden Eagle senior
Octavius Green's 20 points, connecting on five of his 10 three-pointers in the losing effort. Fellow senior
Chris Evans chipped in 16 to close out his career and
Vincent Dillard added 13 points off of the Charleston bench in his final collegiate basketball game. As a unit, UC struggled from the floor shooting just 38% for the night.Â
A team that typically hang their hat on their effort on the defensive end, UC couldn't contain the Pioneer offensive attack which shot 46 percent from the field and connected on 10 of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc. The undersized yet scrappy Pioneers also outrebounded the bigger Golden Eagles 36-31, something that the Charleston team didn't see too often this year.
UC never led in the contest as the Pioneers scored off the opening tip to take the early lead. Charleston forged a tie at 17-17 with just about 6 minutes left in the first half after Dillard made free throw but saw the Pioneers close out the half by scoring 15 of the next 22 points to carry a 32-25 lead over the Golden Eagles.Â
Glenville pushed their second half lead out to 19 points as the shooting woes continued for the Golden Eagles as they sat on just 40 points with 5:40 remaining in the game. Charleston twice had opportunities to cut the lead to single digits with around three minutes to play but turnovers on the offensive end turned into buckets for the Pioneers as they eventually cruised for a 72-60 win over Charleston in the MEC quarterfinals to set up a semifinal matchup with the #4 ranked West Liberty Hilltoppers Saturday evening.
Charleston finished the season with a 19-10 record.Â
