CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston's Women's Volleyball team opened made their home debut on Tuesday against an out of conference opponent, Ohio Dominican University. The Golden Eagles took a disappointing loss to ODU in an exciting five set match. The team was supported enthusiastically by student athletes from many other sports teams, creating an electric atmosphere at the team's temporary home court "up on the hill" at the Charleston Catholic Sports Facility.Â
UC came out strong in the first set and battled ODU to take the first set 26-24. The second set ODU retaliated with a strong 25-16 win. In the third, UC once again prevailed in a point by point overtime game, winning 30-28. The fourth set went to ODU 25-21. In the deciding set, ODU presented their strongest game, winning 15-9.
UC had a strong offensive night with two freshman stepping up to the plate.Â
Carly Granger presented a strong outside showing, ending the match with 13 kills.Â
Mia Herrod, also a freshman, came with a heavy hand on the right side, finishing with 15 kills. Another new face to University of Charleston, transfer
Shiann White, also showed out with 14 kills and 30 digs.
Melissa Reyes put up an impressive 29 assists and 20 digs.
Ohio Dominican also posted some impressive numbers. Tory Thompson put up 17 kills and 29 digs. Jackie Oestreich also showed well offensively with 16 kills.Â
UC will travel this weekend to Richmond, Virginia where they will be competing in a tournament at Virginia State University.
