Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles opened their season with a 4-2 victory over the visiting Dragons of Tiffin University. At the three minute mark of the opening half, senior Erica Lemmert (La Plata, MD) rifled a ball off the crossbar and the Dragons managed to transition the ball 80 yards up the field as Svetlana Gudenkova found Stefania Viscardi for the first goal of the match past the out stretched arms of the UC keeper, Zoe Zyta (Listowel, Ontario). UC's Isabella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA) was awarded a penalty kick ten minutes later which Tiffin's goal keeper, Samantha Ortenzi saved.
Jaffin would then carry the Golden Eagles as the most active player on the pitch. Jaffin scored two unassisted goals at the 26:07 and 43:55 marks of the first half. With seven seconds remaining until halftime, Tiffin gained possession off of a deflection around the mid stripe. Olivia Haskin would split the UC defenders and Ali McCabe would slot home the final goal of the first half. Â
Entering the second half all square, 2-2, the Golden Eagles came out prepared to take the game. Sophomore Natalia Carvajal (Levittown, NY) found Courtney Underwood (Hurricane, WV), who received the ball on her right foot and hit a rocket from 30 yards out that hit the crossbar and went in at 47:25. Jaffin would then pick up her third goal of the game at the 49:34 mark to end the scoring of the match.
The game concluded with UC earning their first win of the season. UC will be back in action on Saturday against Kutztown at Trace Fork fields at 1pm.
