CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston fell at home Sunday afternoon to Fairmont State University by a score of 61-50 in the their third game of a four-game home stand.Â
Â
The Golden Eagles played without their leading scorer Chyress Lockhart, who came in to the game averaging over 20 points in nearly 30 minutes of play. The senior is their captain and floor leader so filling her void with points and leadership proved to be tough for UC.
Â
Charleston scored the first two points of the contest on a layup by Marissa Koob but never led again as the Falcons jumped ahead of the Golden Eagles to lead by nine after the first quarter. Fairmont took advantage of 19 UC turnovers as a result of not having Lockhart to command the offense to score 17 points, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the 11-point loss.Â
Â
Fairmont extended their lead to 15 at the half and led by as many as 18 late in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles continued to play hard in the fourth quarter and outscored the Falcons 16 to 11 in the final ten minutes. It still wasn't enough as Charleston dropped their second straight and fell to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in MEC play.
Â
Kiara Johnson added a lift off the bench for UC, scoring 13 points and grabbing five rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Koob added a double-figure scoring effort with 10 points despite being in early foul trouble that saddled her for most of the first half.
Â
UC returns to the Civic Center on Tuesday evening to host Shepherd University with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
