Golden Eagles Shoot the Lights Out in Win over Glenville

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston stormed past the visiting Glenville State Pioneers Monday evening at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex thanks to some incredible perimeter shooting that gave UC its third consecutive win.

Charleston got a career-high from senior forward Aleks Kesic who poured in 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting, while guards Tino diTrapano and Travon Williams each chipped in 15 points and combined to hit on eight of their 15 attempts from three.  As a team UC shot nearly 60% from the floor and connected on over half of their three-pointers, nailing 14 of 26.

Williams got things started for the Golden Eagles, hitting three triples in the first five minutes of the game as Charleston had a 20-6 lead early in the half.  The Pioneers couldn't find an answer for Charleston over the first 20 minutes with UC either pounding it inside to Kesic who bullied his way for layups or from distance as the Golden Eagle guards drained three after three.  After all said and done, Charleston held a commanding 54-29 lead going into halftime.

The Golden Eagles forced seven first half turnovers, making the most of the Pioneer miscues to score 18 points off the errors.  Charleston extended their lead to 28, 63-35, early in the second half only to see the Pioneers whittle it down to just 14 with just under eight minutes remaining.  UC was determined to not let this one slip away and scored 11 of the next 13 points to again build the lead above 20, 83-60, with four minutes to play.

Charleston cruised over the final minutes and walked away happy with the 22-point, 88-66, win.  UC makes the short trip to W.Va. State on Thursday evening in the Kanawha Valley rivalry game with the Yellow Jackets.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Walker Convention Center.
