Elam Leads the Way in 36-23 Win at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – Marvin Elam's three touchdowns led University of Charleston to a 36-23 road win over Concord at Callaghan Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The victory takes the Golden Eagles to 2-3 after starting the season with three straight losses. Charleston relied heavily on their ground attack, rushing 61 times for 343 yards and four scores.  Elam led all rushers with 139 yards on 23 attempts and fellow backfield mate Tevion Cappe ran for 130 yards on 23 attempts respectively.  Brant Grisel quarterbacked the Golden Eagles, throwing for 124 yards and a score on 11 completions in his 17 pass attempts.

Elam's two fourth quarter scores proved to be the difference as each time Concord pulled within a score, it was Elam who came through with an 11-yard scamper and a 44-yarder with 2:20 remaining that sealed the victory for the Golden Eagles.  UC held a 20-6 lead at the break only to see that lead cut to three, 23-20, midway through the fourth quarter.  That was when Elam took control of the game.

The Golden Eagle defense forced three Mountain Lion turnovers and sacked Concord QB Nick Novak a couple of times. Josef Hinnant was second on the team in tackles with six and picked off Novak just before halftime.

UC returns to the field next Saturday afternoon to host West Liberty University with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. at University of Charleston Stadium.
