CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Liberty University scored 24 consecutive points Saturday afternoon in a 40-23 win over University of Charleston at UC Stadium, spoiling the Golden Eagle Homecoming.
UC raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes of Saturday's game, scoring a safety on West Liberty's opening possession as
Kahzin Daniels sacked Dakota Conwell in the end zone then
Marvin Elam scored on a 10-yard scamper on Charleston's first offensive possession. UC held a 10-point advantage after each team traded touchdowns, 16-6, early in the second quarter before the Toppers reeled off 24 straight points through the remainder of the second and all of the third quarter that gained control of the game, 30-16.
The Golden Eagles had four different players take snaps from under center, the last,
Anthony Fontana, entered in the fourth quarter and made an immediate impact. Fontana connected with
Joey Augustin for a 77-yard score that trimmed the deficit to 30-23 with over 13 minutes remaining in the game. That spark was short lived though as the Toppers finished the game outscoring the Golden Eagles 14-0 to give UC their fourth loss of the season, 40-23.
Joey Augustin led UC in both rushing and receiving, gaining 45 yards on the ground and 128 yards through the air. Charleston was only able to gain 114 yards on 32 carries on the Topper defense. Fontana and
