CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston and Notre Dame College battled through a game delay, heavy rain, and a power outage at Schoenbaum Stadium to play 110 minutes, ending in a 1-1 draw late Thursday evening.
The match was delayed an hour due to heavy thunderstorms in the Charleston area before finally kicking off at 8:00 p.m. Â The Golden Eagles came out on the front foot, outshooting the visiting Falcons 6-0 at the half but were unlucky not to stick one in going into the break. Â UC finally broke the scoreless game early in the second half when
Will Roberts calmly converted a penalty kick after
Felipe Antonio was taken down in the Falcon box, giving Charleston a 1-0 advantage.
Despite being outshot 28-6 for the match, Notre Dame put together a nice set of passes that eventually found Leonardo Paiva at UC's back post that he slotted past Charleston keeper
Paulo Pita to tie the match at 1-1 with 18 minutes left in the match. Â Just a few minutes later the game was stoped when the lights went out at Schoenbaum Stadium leaving the field pitch black, delaying the game for 20 minutes. Â Lights were restored but neither team could put one across in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Charleston constantly threatened a shorthanded Notre Dame team playing with 10 men following a second yellow for Reece Daly in the 88th minute but couldn't take advantage of some golden opportunities resulting in UC's first draw of the season.
The Golden Eagles return to Schoenbaum Stadium on Sunday to host Concord University with first whistle slated for 2:00 p.m.
