Charleston, W.Va. - The visiting Rams of Shepherd University played a defensive style of soccer in an effort to slow the surging Golden Eagles Wednesday afternoon. UC outshot Shepherd 12/0 on the day and the game's lone goal came when junior Adele Siegel (Kolsaas, Norway) converted a penalty kick after being taken down in the box in the 58th minute.
Shepherd was very effective keeping UC in front of them defensively. The Golden Eagles controlled a majority of the possession on the day and improved to a 12-3-2 overall record. With today's victory, the Golden Eagles secured either a second or first place finish in the Mountain East. UC will host the MEC tournament semi-final on Wednesday, November 2nd at Trace Fork with a 7pm kickoff scheduled, opponent to be announced.
UC was also ranked #5 in the NCAA Regional ranking released today.The top six teams in the Atlantic Region qualify for the 2016 Division II NCAA Women's Soccer National Tournament. The team that wins the Mountain East Conference tournament title also gets an automatic qualifier to participate in the NCAA tournament.
UC returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for their final regular season game of the 2016 season. UC junior keeper Zoe Zyta (Listowel, Ontario) registered her tenth shutout of the season and recorded zero saves on the day. Shepherd's keeper, Christi LaBella, recorded eight saves today.
