FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Charleston's late rally to knock off unbeaten Fairmont State University came up short Thursday evening at Duvall-Rosier field, falling to the Falcons 21-13.
The loss takes UC to 2-5, 2-5 (MEC) on the season while Fairmont improves to 7-0, 6-0 (MEC). Charleston fell behind early as the Golden Eagles could only manage 95 total yard in the first half while turning the ball over twice. Fairmont took advantage of one of the turnovers to score a touchdown, leading to a 14-0 going into the locker room at half.
The Golden Eagles did manage to fight its way back into the game after Anthony Fontana hooked up with Joey Augustin for a late third quarter score to cut the deficit in half to 14-7. Fairmont answered with Terrell Charles' second touchdown of the evening that again made it a two-score game, 21-7.
UC responded immediately with a nine-play, 53-yard drive that took just two minutes off the clock to again cut the lead to one score, 21-13, after Marvin Elam ran in a short touchdown from one yard away. Charleston's defense forced the Falcons to punt and took possession with a little over two minutes to play but another turnover stopped the comeback attempt as the Falcons ran out the game clock.
Charleston returns to UC Stadium on Saturday, October 22 to host Urbana University.
