CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston advanced to Sunday's Mountain East Conference Final with a 4-1 defeat of fourth-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan College on a rainy Thursday evening at Schoenbaum Stadium.
It marks the eight consecutive season the Golden Eagles will play for a conference tournament championship with UC winning the previous seven spanning between the WVIAC and the Mountain East. Â Sunday's final will be played at Schoenbaum Stadium as Charleston welcomes in the No. 2 seed Urbana University Blue Knights after narrowly defeating Notre Dame College in the other semifinal. Â UC split the season series with Urbana, winning a 4-1 decision in early September then fell to the Blue Knights 1-0 in mid-October.
The Bobcats shocked the home crowd by scoring the game's first goal just 15 minutes into the MEC semifinal to claim a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. Â The lead was short lived as Patrick Guier connected on his first of two goals on the evening that evened the match at 1-1. Â Bruno Oliveira gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good later in the half by beating Bobcat keeper Alessandro Armenia for the 2-1 lead. Â Guier scored the second of his brace on a wordly free kick that bent around the Bobcat wall and found the net inside the near post, giving UC a 3-1 advantage going into halftime. Â Will Roberts provided the fourth tally for Charleston on a spectacular header finish from a Jermaine Windster cross that capped the scoring at 4-1.
Charleston keeper Paulo Pita provided four saves between the posts for UC. Â
