CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- University of Charleston won their eighth consecutive men's soccer tournament championship, defeating No. 15 Urbana University 2-1 Sunday evening at Schoenbaum Stadium in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship final.
The Golden Eagles swept the regular season and tournament titles for the third straight year and has won every men's soccer tournament championship conducted by the Mountain East Conference. Â The eight consecutive titles go back to when Charleston played in the WVIAC where they won the final four before joining the MEC.
Charleston struck early in Sunday's final against the Blue Knights when Jermaine Windster beat Urbana keeper Nathan Jones to the far post on an one-on-one opportunity just six and a half minutes into the match.  The nation's leader in assists, Patrick Guier, set the up the chance for Windster by playing a through ball past the Urbana defense from midfield that Windster was able to run onto and finish.  Urbana's Lars Blenckers evened the match 10 minutes later when a Tom Walbeoff free kick made it's way to Blenckers foot inside the six that was easily put away, tying the game at 1-1.Â
Charleston didn't waste much time retaking the lead for good when a Patrick Guier strike from the top of the box was blocked but UC's Freddie Tracey was there to clean up from inside the box, beating Jones to the near post to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead which they took into halftime. Â The Blue Knights continued their high press play, putting the UC defense under constant pressure but ultimately Charleston's back line stood strong with keeper Paulo Pita making some key saves late in the match to secure the conference tournament title.
UC will likely host a NCAA Atlantic Region match next Saturday as the Golden Eagles look to get back to the Final Four for the third consecutive season. Â The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Selection Show is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening. Â Watch live
