Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UC Wins by One at Shepherd, 70-69

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Charleston used a 29-point third quarter to hang on to a 70-69 road win over Shepherd University at the Butcher Center Thursday evening, halting a three-game skid.

Charleston was led by Chyress Lockhart's 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists.  Despite only playing 22 minutes, Kiara Johnson earned a double-double pulling down 16 boards and scoring 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting.  Mya Walker added 14 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Shepherd's Cara Mason led all scorers with 21 points, including a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe.  Liz Meyers scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her double-double.

Charleston trailed by two, 26-28, going into the third quarter before erupting for 29 points and claiming an 8-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.  The Golden Eagles built their largest lead out to 10 points before the Rams started to chip away at the UC lead.  Shepherd whittled it down to a single point, 67-66, with 1:46 remaining but a 3-point play by Chyress Lockhart on Charleston's ensuing possession put the Golden Eagles back up four, 70-66.  A couple of empty possessions by Charleston and three free throws by Shepherd again brought Charleston's lead down to one, 70-69, with 40 seconds to play but the Golden Eagle defense tightened up to hold on to the one-point victory as Shepherd's Kristen Munn couldn't convert a layup with five seconds to play.

Charleston improves to 9-16, 7-12 MEC before heading to Fairmont State University on Saturday as part of their two-game road swing.
