CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston softball team opened Mountain East Conference play with a double-header sweep of Concord University by the scores of 10-2 and 5-2.
UC (13-4, 2-0) fell behind in the first inning 2-0 when Concord hit a pop fly that the Golden Eagles weren't able to catch with two outs. Charleston answered in the bottom of the inning when
Kelly Browning singled, scoring
Katelyn Hamilton from second, who had reached based on a fielders choice. UC pushed two across in the bottom of fifth, taking the lead when Hamilton singled, scoring
Rachelle Toppings and
Jenna Evans.
Charleston took advantage of a few Mountain Loins mistakes, scoring seven runs in the sixth innings and the game endind via the 8 run-rule. In the inning,
Bethany Williams, Toppings, and Hamilton all singled. Browning led the inning off via being hit by a pitch.
Alli Burdette pitched a complete game, only allowing a single hit, picking up her eighth win of the season.
Game two saw the Golden Eagles get on the board in the second and third innings. Momentum rose in the Golden Eagles favor when
Laura Ashlock hit a towering two-run home run over the left-centerfield fence. Ashlock was 2-for-3 in the game. Starter
Jessie Rowe pitched five and one-thirds innings, allowing three hits and two runs before Burdette entered in relief in the sixth. For Burdette she picked up her second save of the season, while Rowe picked up her fifth win of the season.
Charleston is back in action on Saturday, March 19 in Wheeling as they take on West Liberty University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
