Golden Eagles Split MEC Doubleheader

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston softball team spilt a doubleheader against the University of Virginia at Wise on Wednesday afternoon. Charleston, which faced the Cavaliers on Saturday, took game one by the score of 9-8 before falling 6-2 in game two.

The Golden Eagles tallied 25 hits and scored 11 runs on the day, and moved to 20-7 on the season, 9-3 in Mountain East Conference play. All nine starters had multiple hits on the day, led by a 4-for-4 game by Alyssa Stanley in game one.

UC jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one; however, UVA-Wise took a 8-7 lead in the sixth. Stanley's single in the sixth drove in two runs, regaining the lead for the Golden Eagles. Alli Burdette worked six innings while striking out nine, earning her 11th win of the season. Jessie Rowe recorded her fifth save of the season with a scoreless seventh.

Game two was a defensive battle until the fifth inning, when UVA-Wise scored five runs. UC recorded 10 hits in the game, but pitcher Taylor Brandts limited the damage to a solo home run by Alayna Carlson in the sixth and a two-out run in the seventh.

Katelyn Hamilton, Bethany Williams, Kelly Browning, Jenna Evans, and Carlson all had three hits for the Golden Eagles on the day, with Williams hitting her fourth home run in game one.

UC is back in action Saturday, Apr. 2nd, as they host #12 West Virginia Wesleyan, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
