CHARLESTON, W.Va. -Â
Alli Burdette (Charleston, WV) and
Jessie Rowe (Lavalette, WV) each threw a complete game shutout as the Golden Eagles swept the No. 12-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan College (29-5) Saturday afternoon by the scores of 4-0 and 1-0. The two shutouts mark only the third and fourth times W.Va. Wesleyan has been held to zero runs on the season.
In game one,
Laura Ashlock (Kansas City, MO) hit a 1-2 pitch over the left center field wall for a two-run homerun that scored
Katelyn Hamilton (Parkersburg, WV), who had reached on an error the at-bat before. That would be all starter Burdette (12-2) needed, as she scattered five hits and struck out eight, only allowing two Bobcats into scoring position Charleston got some much needed insurance when
Alayna Carlson (Dunkirk, NY) and
Alyssa Stanley (Blacklick, OH) provided back-to-back hits in the sixth to push two more runs across. A 1-2-3 seventh gave the Golden Eagles their 21st victory of the season.
Game two was a pitching gem between Rowe and Wesleyan starter Hannah Vet. Rowe scattered five hits and produced 12 ground ball outs on the day, picking up her 10th win of the season. The lone run came with one out in the sixth when
Bethany Williams (Cooper City, FL) singled to score Hamilton from third. For UC,
Kelly Browning (Fairfield, OH) had two of UC's four hits in the game.
With the wins Charleston moved to 22-7, 11-3 in Mountain East Conference play. WVWC and UC are tied atop the MEC Southern Division standings.
Charleston will be back in action Sunday as it hosts Glenville State, with first pitch at 2 p.m.
