UC Struggles in Losses to Battlers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston opened their 2016 home baseball schedule with a pair of losses to Alderson Broaddus University over the weekend at Triana Field, falling 7-5 and 7-0 in their two games against the visiting Battlers.

Game 1: AB 7 – Charleston 5

The Golden Eagles started the series Friday afternoon with a nine-inning game versus AB.  Charleston got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the first inning only to see the Battlers take a 3-2 lead in the second after taking advantage of a couple of Charleston miscues in the field.  UC, trailing by a run in the 7th, saw the Battlers plate three runs to take a commanding 7-3 lead and knock Charleston starter, Tyler Shreve, from the game.

UC loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't produce any runs when Battler reliever Trent Shaw entered to strike out two Golden Eagle batters and squash the Charleston threat.  UC loaded the bases again in the eighth, scoring twice, but left the sacks full and still trailing 7-5.  The Golden Eagles went in order in the ninth, losing the first game of the series 7-5.

Game 2: AB 7 – Charleston 0

Alderson Broaddus pitcher Randy Dobnak shut down Charleston in the second game of the series, pitching a two-hit shutout of the Golden Eagles in a 7-0 win.  Adam Jafine earned the loss in his first start as a Golden Eagle, giving up three runs on four hits in four innings of work.  Charleston struggled mightily from the plate, striking out 12 times in 22 at-bats.
