Back-To-Back Shutouts Leads to Sweep of Urbana

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The 1-2 punch of Alli Burdette and Jessie Rowe was in full force Sunday as the University of Charleston softball team swept a doubleheader from Mountain East Conference opponent Urbana University by the scores of 10-0 and 5-0.

For the Golden Eagles, now on an eight-game winning streak, the two wins move them to 28-7 on the season. This marks the second time this season that UC has had an eight-game winning steak. The two MEC wins give UC a 17-3 record on the season and keeps the Golden Eagles in a tie for first atop the Southern Division standings.

Alayna Carlson and Kelly Browning led the charge for UC at the plate, tallying nine hits on the day between the two of them. Together they hit for the cycle, as Browning and Carlson both singled and doubled on the day, while Browning added a triple and Carlson added a three-run homerun. Together they drove in nine runs and scored four.

In game one, Burdette allowed four hits over six innings in a 10-0 run rule victory for Charleston. The victory is her MEC-leading 15th of the season and her sixth consecutive start recording a victory. Katelyn Hamilton added a 3-for-4 game at the plate, scoring two runs. Rachelle Toppings and Laura Ashlock added two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

In the nightcap, Rowe took a perfect game into the fifth inning, when, with one out, she surrendered a double to right field, ending the perfect game and no hit bid. In the game she allowed only three hits while striking out five. Rowe moves to 13-4, lowering her earned run average to 1.41. Carlson led the charge at the plate for UC, posting a 3-for-3 mark.

Charleston will be back in action Monday, April 11, as it hosts Notre Dame College with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
