CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston softball team ran its winning streak to 10 in a row with a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame College Monday afternoon.
Charleston (30-7, 19-3 MEC) scored 17 runs on 17 hits and defeated NDC twice by the 8-run mercy rule with 8-0 and 9-0 victories.
In game one, the Golden Eagles used 10 hits to score eight runs, four of which came in the first inning.
Alli Burdette did the rest, taking a perfect game into the fifth, when NDC singled between first and second. Burdette (16-2) only surrendered two hits while striking out four in six innings. The game ended when
Laura Ashlock ripped a double down the right field line, scoring
Rachelle Toppings and
Allison Evans. Toppings, Ashlock,
Katelyn Hamilton,and
Bethany Williams each had two hits and accounted for six of the eight runs, while Williams and Ashlock drove in three each.
Game two had a similar feel as UC jumped on top 2-0 in the first when Hamilton doubled, driving in Toppings, and
Kelly Browning added a sacrifice fly, scoring Hamilton from third. Charleston put six more on the board in the third, capped off by a bases-loaded triple by Evans that cleared the bases.
Jessie Rowe picked up her 14th win of the season and her third straight shutout. Rowe struck out four and allowed three hits in the five-inning victory.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action when they host Bluefield State College on Wednesday, April 13, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Â
