UC Runs Streak to 12 With Sweep of Bluefield

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Bluefield State College, running its winning streak to 12 games and tying the longest such streak in school history.

The doubleheader saw the Golden Eagles tally 32 hits and score 23 runs while stealing 11 bases.

In game one, Alli Burdette struck out 10 batters in her 17th win of the season, a 2-1 decision where Kelly Browning's double in the fifth inning gave Charleston the lead. Natalie Beck scored the first run for Charleston after singling, stealing second, and scoring on ball hit by Browning in the first inning. Allison Evans chipped in two singles for the Golden Eagles.

In the nightcap, UC scored 21 times and accounted for 25 of the 32 hits on the day. Eleven of the 13 different batters for UC recorded hits, including four each from Evans, Rachelle Toppings, and Browning, who recorded her fourth home run of the season. Beck added three hits and scored three times, while Laura Ashlock hit her 10th home run of the season. Bailey Gogia added two hits and drove in three runs.

Jessie Rowe (15-4) struck out eight of the first 12 batters before giving away to Alexis Bandin in the fourth. Bandin pitched two scoreless innings, giving up no hits and striking out one in the 21-0 victory.

Charleston is now 32-7 on the season and tied with W.Va. Wesleyan atop the Southern Division standings at 19-3.  UC will travel to Glenville State on Saturday before taking on Wesleyan on Sunday in Buckhannon, W.Va.
