CHARLESTON, W.Va. - With a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State College on Saturday, the University of Charleston women's softball team set a new season high for wins in a row with 14, breaking the previous record of 12, set in 2012. UC won game one 4-1 behind Alli Burdette's one hitter. The Golden Eagles then went on to win a thriller, 3-2 in nine innings, in which Burdette picked up the win in relief.
On the day, UC had no problem generating baserunners, as it totaled 24 hits and drew six walks. However, it left 25 runners on base in the two games.
Burdette commanded the mound in both games, throwing 10 1/3 innings and striking out 18 batters. Jessie Rowe, Charleston's game two starter, pitched 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and allowing just two runs.Â
At the plate for the Golden Eagles, Bethany Williams led the charge, going 5-for-8 with two doubles, while Rachelle Toppings added four hits. Kelly Browning hit her fifth home run of the season in the 4-1 victory. Jenna Evans, Katelyn Hamilton, and Alayna Carlson each tallied three hits for the Golden Eagles, including Evans' game-winning single in the ninth to drive in Browning, who had tripled to lead off the inning.
On the season, Charleston moves to 34-7 and is now 21-3 in Mountain East Conference play. UC sits tied with W.Va. Wesleyan atop of the Southern Division standing. The two teams face off Sunday, April 17, in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Buckhannon.
