CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's softball team looked to capitalize and keep the uprising momentum from its Mountain East Conference sweep of W.Va. Wesleyan as it hosted Glenville State College in a doubleheader on Sunday.Â
Alli Burdette (Charleston, WV) made sure that she did her part, throwing a no-hitter in game one of the twin-bill, which UC won via the 8-run mercy rule, 8-0. Burdette, who picked up her 13th win of the season, allowed just two walks as the only base runners in the game while striking out five in the complete game shutout. At the plate for Charleston, the Golden Eagles tallied 11 hits led by
Katelyn Hamilton (Parkersburg, WV), who went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
Kelly Browning (Fairfield, OH) and
Rachelle Toppings (Logan, WV) each chipped in two hits apiece while scoring three times and driving in three.Â
UC (24-7, 13-2 MEC) jumped on the board in the first inning when Toppings scored on a sacrifice fly from the bat of
Laura Ashlock (Kansas City, MO). The Golden Eagles went on to score in the second, third, and sixth innings as the game ended when Browning doubled down the third baseline, scoring Toppings and Hamilton with two outs in the sixth.
Game two was much closer as UC pushed two runs across in the first inning taking the lead.
Jessie Rowe (Lavalette, WV) handled it from there, scattering four hits over seven innings of work and giving up a lone unearned run in the fourth inning. Charleston added an insurance run in the fifth off a Browning single that scored Toppings from third, who had led off the inning with a single.
Alayna Carlson (Dunkirk, NY) and Toppings each had two hits apiece with Ashlock and Browning adding 1-for-3 games.
UC will look to extend its four-game winning streak on Tuesday, when it travels to W.Va. State University, for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
